Human Geography offers a fresh perspective for many students who traditionally view Geography as the memorization of capitals, countries, and rivers. Instead of taking map quizzes, students complete activities and assessments that relate to their own lives, whether it be discussing their migration story, the impact they have on their environment, or creating thematic maps that are useful in their careers. Further, because most students enrolled in the course are from Indiana and will stay in Central Indiana after graduation, the textbook focuses on patterns related to Indiana and Indianapolis. This helps students relate even more to Human Geography concepts as they can apply their local knowledge. The textbook and course is a mix of videos, text readings, and interactive quizzes called “Free Point Activities”.
Andrew (“Andy”) Baker is a lifelong Hoosier that has been interested in Geography since he was a kid. After all, he did win his 6th Grade Geography Bee at West Grove Elementary in Greenwood, Indiana. Initially pursuing a degree and career in Finance, Andy found several Geography courses at Eastern Illinois University to be not only interesting, but relevant. Of particular interest were courses in Geomorphology and Human-Impact on the Environment, which was quite different than the Business Finance courses. After graduating with a degree in Business and another in Geography, Andy completed graduate work at Ohio University and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. At Ohio, his thesis research focused on the local impact of a major sporting event leaving an area. At Tennessee, his dissertation research studied the reasons and impacts for a major sporting event expanding to new market areas. Teaching has also been something Andy has enjoyed, even back when he was 14 years old teaching adults the game of tennis. At the age of 24, Andy started his college teaching career at Ivy Tech Community College. While completing his PhD, he taught several massive lectures with over 200 students. In 2008, he landed his “dream job” teaching in his hometown of Indianapolis at IUPUI. Since arriving, he has taught over 10 different courses, created 4 brand new courses, converted 3 courses to online versions, and has taught over 2000 online students since 2012. Andy also scores AP Human Geography essays each summer, helping to stay current on topics and methods.
