El mundo hispano a lo largo de los años provides a set of materials that presents an integrated view of the history, cultural development, and artistic production of Spain and Spanish America. Through the use of interactive texts and visuals you should achieve a strong historical background before studying more advanced courses in culture and literature.
"El Mundo Hispano" is designed to introduce you to Spain and Spanish America from prehistory to the early decades of the twentieth century. It provides a panoramic introduction to the history and cultures of Spain and Spanish America and;explores the peculiarities that gives each of the regions included in the Hispanic world its distinctive character, as well as the elements that they have in common. Over the semester, the student will become familiar with the multicultural traditions of the Hispanic world: Romans, Moslems, Jews, and Christians in Spain; Africans, Europeans during the colonial period; revolutions, dictatorships, and the formation of modern societies. However, given the modular structure of the lessons, you can choose to study specific components of culture and civilization, such as history, art, or literature.
Hélène de Fays’ is the Minor in Spanish for the Professions Coordinator and Teaching Professor of Spanish in the Department of Romance Studies at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Her main objective as a teacher is to help her students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Hispanic world, its language and its cultures. As such, in her classes, she strives to awaken her students’ consciousness to the wealth of the Hispanic cultures, to motivate them to go beyond what we do in the classroom and to inspire them to further explore the Spanish-speaking world, by taking more advanced classes, studying abroad or travelling independently.
During her years at UNC, she has had the opportunity to teach a broad range of courses at a variety of levels. She has been in the vanguard of educational innovation and, in order to enhance the language learning experience, she strives to incorporate technology into the classroom through applications of the World Wide Web, the use of Power Point activities, electronic discussion forums such as Voicethread, and the development of materials in electronic form.
