This book was designed and created to provide guidance to college students in their first year. The chapters have numerous activities to help you develop skills for your successful transition. Each topic was formed based on the research of first generation college students and underrepresented populations then developed because of need.
When I was a college student over 30 years ago, there were many things that I wish I knew. As a first generation college student from Gary, Indiana, I did not have access or exposure to some vital information that would have saved me time and stress. My mother would always say if you got lemons then make lemonade and that’s what I did. It was more difficult and it took me longer to accomplish things others at my university already knew but I persisted. Through tenacity and dedication, I earned a Bachelor and Master of Science in Business Management with the support of my village.
During my 26 plus years of experience in higher education, I have noticed some of the same concerns still exist for students. I have searched relentlessly for a book that encompasses all that is required to serve students’ needs but could not find one. This is the reason and purpose for creating this book. During the initial months of COVID, I spent many hours building this platform for any student to use that would improve their journey in college. Please take the time to complete the reflection questions and any activities suggested to enhance your own learning experience. This is your moment in time so savor it, always give 100%, and be yourself. I wish you the best in your first year of college!
